Berberine has liver and intestine cleansing properties, which assist with immuno-stimulation via increased blood flow to the spleen. The ability of berberine to activate macrophages has been acknowledged extensively. The function of increasing immuno-stimulation may alleviate viral and bacterial patterns such as herpes and urinary tract infections and reduce stress on the body’s systems. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) employs berberines in treating damp-heat syndromes, particularly in intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s. Reports have also shown beneficial effects on refractory steroid-dependent and steroid-resistant ulcerative colitis in humans. It is documented that berberines may play an essential role in the mucosal healing process and reduction of interleukin-8 (IL-8).
